RM awardee on board: Sea row pains ‘Ka Dodoy’

Roberto “Ka Dodoy” Ballon, the 2021 Ramon Magsaysay awardee, embarked on a poignant journey aboard the MV Kapitan Felix Oca. Despite his recent electoral defeat, his unwavering dedication to advocating for fishermen’s rights and national sovereignty shines through. Ballon, a fisherman from Zamboanga Sibugay, was part of a diverse group on the Atin Ito Coalition’s mission to the West Philippine Sea.

The mission aimed to draw attention to the plight of Filipino fishermen affected by Chinese aggression in the region. As Ballon gazed at the vast expanse of the sea, he expressed the deep sorrow felt by those unable to fish freely due to the looming presence of the Chinese Coast Guard. His dream, shared by many, is for fishermen to navigate the waters without fear or hindrance, reclaiming their traditional fishing grounds in the West Philippine Sea.

Ballon’s involvement in the mission was driven by a sense of urgency and a desire to address the escalating dangers faced by Filipino fishermen. He highlighted the unequal power dynamics at play, denouncing China’s encroachment on Philippine waters as not just a territorial issue but a matter of livelihoods and future generations’ well-being. The impact of Chinese aggression extends beyond economic loss to the erosion of fundamental rights and aspirations for a better future.

As a representative of one of the most disadvantaged sectors in Philippine society, Ballon emphasized the critical importance of safeguarding the West Philippine Sea as a beacon of hope for impoverished communities. The sea symbolizes more than a source of sustenance; it embodies the aspirations for a better life, free from the shackles of poverty and hunger.

The emotional toll of witnessing the challenges faced by fishermen is palpable in Ballon’s words. He painted a stark picture of the daily struggles endured by fishermen, where a failed catch means empty stomachs and missed opportunities for their children. The fear of losing access to the West Philippine Sea looms large, threatening to exacerbate hunger and poverty to unimaginable depths.

In Ballon’s eyes, the West Philippine Sea conflict transcends regional boundaries—it is a national concern that demands unified action and solidarity. Regardless of one’s origin, the repercussions of losing control over these waters would reverberate across the entire nation, amplifying the existing disparities and vulnerabilities faced by marginalized communities.

Through his advocacy and personal experiences, Ballon calls upon Filipinos to recognize the urgency of the situation and stand together in defense of their rights and resources. His voice echoes a plea for collective action, urging individuals from all corners of the Philippines to unite in safeguarding the West Philippine Sea for current and future generations.

As the MV Kapitan Felix Oca returned to port, Ballon’s message resonates beyond the waves, carrying with it a profound reminder of the interconnectedness of geopolitical tensions and personal struggles. His narrative serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of maritime disputes and the imperative for concerted efforts to protect the seas that sustain livelihoods and national identity.
