Elon Musk should stay out of politics, U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent says

Elon Musk, the enigmatic billionaire known for his groundbreaking ventures in the realms of electric vehicles and space exploration, has recently stirred up a political storm with his announcement of the formation of a new U.S. political party – the “America Party.” This move comes hot on the heels of his escalating feud with then-U.S. President Donald Trump over the latter’s tax-cut and spending bill, which Musk vehemently criticized, claiming it would lead to the country’s financial ruin.

In response to Musk’s political ambitions, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent cautioned that Musk should focus on running his companies, rather than delving into the tumultuous world of politics. Bessent highlighted concerns from the boards of directors at Musk’s companies, Tesla and SpaceX, who are likely to prefer that he steer clear of political entanglements. The investment firm Azoria Partners also expressed reservations, delaying a fund tied to Tesla due to the potential conflict posed by Musk’s political activities.

Musk’s foray into politics marks a significant departure from his previous role as a top adviser to the White House during the early days of Trump’s presidency, where he advocated for reducing the size of government. However, his criticism of Trump’s spending bill led to a falling out between the two, ultimately culminating in Musk’s decision to establish his own political party to challenge Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections.

Critics of the controversial bill, which passed on party-line votes and has drawn ire for its impact on the federal budget deficit, argue that it will have detrimental effects on the economy. Trump, on the other hand, attributed Musk’s opposition to the bill to the removal of green-energy credits for Tesla’s electric vehicles, threatening repercussions in the form of withdrawing government contracts and subsidies from Tesla and SpaceX.

Despite Musk’s notable influence and success in the business world, Bessent suggested that his political endeavors may not resonate as strongly with voters as his earlier initiatives, such as the Department of Government Efficiency. The announcement of the “America Party” prompted swift pushback from Azoria Partners, with CEO James Fishback expressing concerns about the compatibility of Musk’s political ambitions with his responsibilities as CEO of Tesla.

As the political drama unfolds, voices from both sides of the aisle weigh in on the implications of Musk’s decision. While the White House remained silent on the matter, Stephen Miran, chairman of Trump’s Council of Economic Advisers, defended the spending bill, touting its potential to spur economic growth.

In a landscape already fraught with tension and division, Musk’s entry into the political arena adds another layer of complexity. His bold move serves as a reminder of the intersection between business and politics, raising questions about the boundaries and responsibilities of corporate leaders in shaping the socio-political landscape. As Musk navigates this uncharted territory, the repercussions of his political aspirations remain to be seen, leaving observers and stakeholders alike to ponder the evolving role of influential figures in shaping the future of governance and society.
