The call to safeguard our oceans has never been more urgent. The United Nations (UN) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) recently issued a stark warning about the threats facing our oceans. These vast bodies of water not only provide food and livelihoods for millions but also play a crucial role in sustaining life on Earth.
UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, highlighted the importance of preserving our oceans in his message on World Oceans Day 2025. He emphasized the critical role oceans play in our daily lives, stating,
“Our ocean has not only shaped cultures, stirred imaginations, and inspired wonder across the ages; it also supplies the air we breathe, the food we eat, the jobs we need and the climate we count on.”
Guterres drew attention to the distress signals emanating from our oceans – from plastic pollution to dwindling fish populations and the degradation of marine ecosystems. He underscored the pressing need for collective global action to combat these challenges and prevent further exploitation of marine resources.
“Today, the ocean needs our help,”
Guterres implored. The theme for this year’s World Oceans Day was
“Wonder: Sustaining what sustains us,”
serving as a poignant reminder of how interconnected human well-being is with that of our oceans.
According to the UN, oceans are responsible for producing over 50% of the planet’s oxygen and harbor most of Earth’s biodiversity. Moreover, they serve as a primary source of protein for more than a billion people worldwide. By 2030, it is projected that around 40 million individuals will be reliant on ocean-based industries for their livelihoods.
Despite their vital importance, our oceans are under severe threat due to rampant pollution, overexploitation of resources, and climate change. Overexploitation has led to a significant decline in large fish populations and substantial damage to coral reefs. This unbridled exploitation without adequate replenishment measures jeopardizes marine ecosystems’ long-term sustainability.
Asean echoed these concerns about ocean health within its region — stressing that Southeast Asian seas are essential for supporting local livelihoods while harboring rich natural and cultural heritage. The regional bloc joined hands with global efforts in calling for enhanced protection and sustainable management practices to ensure future generations can benefit from healthy marine ecosystems.
As part of ongoing efforts to address these issues comprehensively, global leaders convened at the third UN Ocean Conference hosted by France and Costa Rica in Nice from June 9-13, 2025. The conference aimed at fostering dialogue among nations to formulate strategies for preserving our oceans effectively.
The urgency surrounding ocean conservation cannot be overstated. With concerted international cooperation and proactive measures at both regional and global levels, there remains hope that we can reverse current trends threatening our precious marine environments.
In conclusion, protecting our oceans is not just an environmental issue but a moral imperative crucial for securing a sustainable future for all life on Earth.
