Marbil thanks DOJ for junking raps vs him over Quiboloy compound raid

Philippine National Police Chief General Rommel Francisco Marbil expressed his gratitude to the Department of Justice for dismissing the cases filed against him regarding the raid on the compound of the religious sect Kingdom of Jesus Christ in Davao City. The charges of malicious mischief and violation of domicile were related to the attempted arrest of the now-detained preacher Apollo Quiboloy. Marbil, facing the end of his term as PNP chief, expressed relief at the resolution of the case, thanking Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla and the DOJ for their fair assessment.

The incident in question took place in June 2024 when 400 police officers entered the KOJC’s Glory Mountain Compound in Barangay Tamayong, Davao City, in search of Quiboloy. Former President Rodrigo Duterte filed complaints against Marbil, along with former Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos and other police officers. However, the DOJ’s recent decision to dismiss the complaints highlighted the lack of evidence to suggest that the police acted unlawfully during the raid.

In response to the DOJ’s ruling, Marbil defended the actions taken during the raid, emphasizing the police’s duty to execute search warrants when necessary. Despite the unsuccessful attempt to locate Quiboloy during the initial raid, he was eventually apprehended in September 2024 following a standoff between the police and the religious group’s supporters. Quiboloy is currently detained at the Pasig City Jail male dormitory to face charges related to child abuse, sexual abuse, and human trafficking.

The resolution of this case not only brings relief to Marbil but also raises questions about the implications of law enforcement actions involving influential figures and religious organizations. The intersection of legal proceedings, law enforcement protocols, and individual rights underscores the complexity of such situations. The DOJ’s decision serves as a reminder of the importance of evidence-based judgments in legal matters, especially when dealing with high-profile cases.

As the controversy surrounding the raid on the KOJC compound comes to a close, it prompts reflection on the broader issues of accountability, justice, and the balance of power between law enforcement agencies and religious institutions. The case serves as a notable example of the challenges faced by authorities when carrying out operations involving religious leaders and their followers. It also underscores the significance of upholding the rule of law while respecting individual liberties and due process.

In conclusion, the resolution of the legal battle between Marbil and the DOJ sheds light on the complexities of law enforcement actions in sensitive situations. The case serves as a reminder of the need for thorough investigations, adherence to legal procedures, and the fair treatment of all parties involved. It also highlights the broader societal implications of such incidents, emphasizing the importance of transparency, accountability, and integrity in upholding the principles of justice and the rule of law.
